The A-3110 road runs through the municipality of Elburgo and Vitoria-Gasteiz with a route that is not suitable for the vehicles that travel on it and with a crossing over the railroad with a roadway without shoulders and difficulty for two heavy vehicles to cross. This is a safety problem. This crossing is eliminated with the present Elburgo Bypass project. The layout of the current Elburgo bypass consists essentially of a curve of very small radius and several intersections with streets in the village, such as Santa Marina Street, which, for safety reasons, require a speed of 50 km/h.
In the present project, following the Álava Integral Road Plan, it has been designed for a design speed of 80-100 km/h. The geometric characteristics of the new carriageway are as follows: carriageway width of 7 m (2 x 3.50 m), shoulder width of 2×1.50 m and outer berms of 1.00 m.
Currently the section of the A-3110 road, between the current intersection with the A-4134 road and the beginning of the Alegría bypass, has a length of approximately 3.4 kilometers. With the project, it will have a length of 3.8 kilometers, with radii much greater than the current ones, favoring a more comfortable and safer driving.
Along the route, a “diamond with weights” type junction is contemplated for the connection of the A-3110 with the A-4121 and the entrance road to the village of Alegría (Alegría Errepidea). The objective is to allow access to Alegría-Dulantzi as well as to Elburgo and Gázeta. The Oreitia intersection between the A-3110 and the A-4134 is also defined to facilitate left turns from the trunk road, by means of central lanes at the intersection.
New structures are also designed for the crossing of the Alegría river, the irrigation canal and the Madrid-Hendaye railroad, which are located under the route of the alternative selected in the Informative Study. The proposed solution also contemplates the replacement of the existing roads of agricultural plots, which are affected by the new route of the bypass.
