The railway lines operated by EuskoTren cover a total length of 186 km, made up of different types and ages of track, which require periodic updating according to their age and condition. The Mendaro station has an old generation of track equipment, consisting of 45 RN rail and wooden sleeper between PPKK 60+264 and 60+547 of the Euskotren line between Bilbao and Donostia.
The existing track material is 19 years old (installed in 1998). The current tracks are metric gauge and are equipped with 45 kg/m rail mounted on wooden sleepers with Vossloh fastening.
The current state of the sleepers, the fastenings, the track equipment and the type of equipment generate problems of over-width in curves, loss of track alignment during the summer season and loss of levelling at joints. In order to remedy these deficiencies, it was necessary to renew the track equipment and the elements linked to the railway platform.
With this in mind, the Mendaro station track modernization construction project and elimination of the level crossing between platforms was carried out. However, the modification of the initial conditions poses the need to adapt and update these works.
